Norwich VTS was one of the first schemes in the country and was
founded in the mid 1970's. It is, therefore, one of the longest
established in the country. By East Anglian standards it is large;
at present there are 43 trainees on the scheme at varying stages
and on different types of scheme.
There are twenty-seven training practices attached to the scheme
and between them they include thirty-nine trainers. All styles
of practice are represented, including rural, urban, dispensing
and non-dispensing, fund-holders, non-fund-holders and those that
are involved in commissioning.
The philosophy of the Norwich VTS is as follows:
- education should be enjoyable as well as challenging
- doctors derive their knowledge and values from their own efforts,
not by having them "handed down"
- a training scheme cannot equip anyone for an entire working
life, but should enable its alumni to continue lifelong education.
