First 6 months in General Practice
- helps you understand what a GP career is about
- helps you to focus on the GP relevant aspects of subsequent hospital posts
- gives you a broad experience in a wide range of conditions
The Norwich scheme benefits from a wide variety of training practices. The first six months and the final year is spent within general practice. The last 12 months is normally spent in the same practice. We try to place registrars in contrasting practices in their final 12 months. Some practices take more than one registrar at a time. The scheme can offer short term placements in 'non-training' practices for part of the working week during the final year.
Note: Practices take first and final year registrars in a rotating pattern. For information on likely practice availability, contact the Scheme Administrator.
Final 12 months in General Practice
- choose a contrasting practice to the first
- develop an on-going mentoring relationship with an experienced GP
- get support and have stability whilst completing nMRCGP
Out of Hours training
Registrars currently receive a banding supplement to their pay of 50%. This reflects the additional costs involved in e.g. travelling to practices, home village mileage as well as the required OOH committment for completion of GP training.
In Norfolk, OOH sessions are arranged with qualified GP supervisors working for Anglia Medical Care, the local OOH provider, which is part of the East of England Ambulance Trust. AMC have a programme of training in OOH care comprising induction, base sessions, telephone consultation training, base consulting and home visiting. With training and competency achievement, Registrars move towards independent OOH practice during their training.
